Jessica Larche Washington
From Scholarship Recipient to Scholarship Donor
In Memory of Her Grandmother
Jefferson Dollars for Scholars is proud to announce the Joyce Marsalis Morris Memorial Scholarship on what would have been the educator's 90th birthday, December 10th. The memorial scholarship, provided by her family, is a one-time $500 award for a Jefferson Parish high school senior attending an HBCU.
Morris was a celebrated math teacher in the Jefferson Parish Public School System, a fierce champion for higher education at historically Black colleges and universities, and a devoted mother and grandmother. Her remarkable life ended due to complications from dementia on March 13, 2020 at 89 years old, but her legacy will live forever.
Morris taught math for several decades at West Jefferson High School. She spent the later part of her teaching career at John Ehret High School before retiring in the late 1990s. Morris was a proud alumna of Southern University, earning her bachelor's and master's degrees in education at the historically Black university. Her children and grandchildren went on to earn their education from HBCUs as well.
"Grandma Joyce chartered a path for excellence, and showed our family anything was possible," said one of her grandchildren, Jessica Larché Washington. Washington was a 2003 Jefferson Dollars for Scholars recipient, and the 2003 Valedictorian of West Jefferson High School. Jessica graduated summa cum laude from Florida A&M University, a prestigious HBCU. She is now an Emmy award-winning news anchor at the CBS News affiliate in Norfolk, Virginia.
"Our entire family is forever grateful to the rock of our family, and we are committed to ensuring her legacy lives on for generations through this memorial scholarship," said Washington.
Our thanks, Jessica, to you and your family for this full circle gift!
